When Is the Best Time to Visit Plakias, Crete?
South Crete has the longest swimming season in Greece — practical sea swimming runs from late April to mid-November. But "best time" depends heavily on what kind of stay you want: a quiet pre-season escape, a peak-summer beach holiday, or a still-warm-but-empty late-season trip. Here is the honest month-by-month for planning a villa in Plakias.
Quick answer
- Best overall: late May to mid-June — warm sea, long days, almost no crowds, peak villa availability.
- Best for guaranteed heat: July and August — hottest, busiest, book 6+ months ahead.
- Best secret window: mid-September to early October — sea is at its warmest, prices drop, light goes golden.
- Avoid for swimming: November to mid-April — village half-closed, sea cold, occasional rain.
Month-by-month
April — Spring opening
Days warm, evenings still cool. Sea around 17–18°C — refreshing rather than swimmable for most. Wildflowers cover the hills. The village starts to wake up around mid-month. A great choice for hiking, photography, or guests who want to be the first ones back.
May — Pre-season sweet spot
Sea climbs from 18 to 21°C through the month — by late May it's swimmable for most. Daytime 22–27°C, sunshine almost guaranteed. Tavernas open, beaches still empty. Villa prices are at their lowest pre-summer rate.
June — The window everyone misses
Possibly the best month overall: sea at 22–24°C, daytime 26–30°C, almost no crowds, all villages fully open. Days are at their longest (sunset around 20:45). If you can avoid the school-holiday calendar, this is the month to choose.
July — Peak season begins
Daytime 28–34°C, sea at 24–25°C. Beaches are busier and tavernas get loud at night, but it's still nothing like the north coast of Crete. Book a villa with private pool well in advance — by mid-spring most July weeks are gone.
August — Hot, busy, brilliant
The hottest month: 30–36°C daytime, sea at 25–26°C. Plakias is busy by South Crete standards but still calmer than Chania or Rethymno. The Meltemi wind sometimes picks up, which actually helps with the heat. This is the only month where booking 9+ months ahead is meaningful.
September — The connoisseur's month
Daytime drops to 26–30°C, sea stays at 24–25°C (warmest of the year, because the Mediterranean lags the air). The school crowds clear out by mid-month, prices drop, and the light goes from harsh midsummer white to honeyed gold. Many returning guests come specifically for this window.
October — The last calm weeks
Early October still feels like summer: 23–28°C, sea at 22–24°C. By late October the sea cools to 21°C and evenings need a sweater, but it's still a perfectly good villa stay if you want quiet, warm, and beautiful. Tavernas start closing from mid-month.
November to April — Off-season
Village half-closed, sea too cool for casual swimming, occasional rainy days. A different kind of trip — for hiking, writing retreats, or workations in a private villa with a wood stove. Possible at Secret Oasis but not what most guests come for.

| July | 24–25 | 28–34 | Busy |

| September | 24–25 | 26–30 | Quiet → Empty |

How to choose your villa for the season
In peak heat (July–August), a villa with a private pool turns the hottest hours into the best hours of the day — you can stay in your own water until the sun drops, then walk to the BBQ terrace for dinner. In the shoulder months (May–June, September–October), a villa with sea view matters more, because you'll be on the terrace at all hours, not just at sunset.
For couples and small groups, the intimate hill villas (Villa 3 and Villa 4) work beautifully in any month. For larger families and groups of friends, the four-bedroom hill villas (Villa 1 and Villa 2) make the most of long shared dinners on the terrace.
